Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. Great Lakes market region, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, is a hub of activity for the Industrial Manufacturing Industry. Industrial Info is tracking more than $13 billion worth of projects that are set to kick off in the region in fourth-quarter 2020. While two large transportation systems projects give Illinois a leading edge in terms of project value, the region also will be kicking off projects in the distribution and warehousing sector, automotive sector and others.

Among the largest projects planned to kick off in the upcoming quarter is the construction of an international airport terminal at Chicago O'Hare International Airport in Illinois. The project entails constructing a 300,000-square-foot terminal with 10 gates and three new concourses to make way for larger international aircraft, replacing the 55-year-old Terminal 2. The $8.5 billion project has multiple architects, including Corgan Associates Incorporated (Dallas, Texas) and STL Architects (Chicago). The project is expected to take approximately eight years to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Other large transportation projects include Chicago Transit Authority's (Chicago) planned Phase I modernization on the Red and Purple lines on the city's metropolitan rail network. The project includes rebuilding four stations with wider platforms and elevators, along with new track, bridges and viaducts, on a 1.3-mile stretch of track to improve service and add accessibility according to the American with Disabilities Act. The project is expected to kick by the end of this year and be completed in the summer of 2024. Walsh Group (Chicago) is performing design-build services. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Seemingly no region of the U.S. has been left untouched by e-commerce giant Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington), and the Great Lakes region, where Amazon plans to kick off at least four projects in the upcoming quarter, is no exception. In Michigan, Amazon will build a distribution center and renovate a delivery station. The four-story, 3.8 million-square-foot distribution center will be built in Detroit on a 78-acre section of the former Michigan State Fairgrounds. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report. The delivery station renovation will occur in Sterling Heights and entails renovating a 576,000-square-foot building and installing supporting equipment to provide regional delivery service. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Amazon also has plans for two data center projects in Ohio. In New Albany, Amazon will construct Building 4 at its existing facility. The 170,000-square-foot facility will help provide expanded cloud data services in the region. The project is expected to take about a year to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report. In Hilliard, on the northwestern outskirts of Columbus, Amazon will be constructing a Phase IV data center building of more than 152,000 square feet. Holder Construction Group LLV (Herndon, Virginia) is the general contractor on the project, which is expected to wrap up late next summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

A few fourth-quarter automotive project starts dot the Great Lakes landscape. Among these is NTN Corporation's (Osaka, Japan) expansion of a drive shaft manufacturing plant in Anderson, Indiana. Contractors will install new heat treatment equipment and additional production equipment to increase the manufacturing capacity of drive shaft components for four-wheel-drive vehicles. The project is expected to kick off early in the quarter and take about a year to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In Normal, Illinois, Rivian Automotive Incorporated (Irvine, California), general contractor P.J. Hoerr (Peoria, Illinois) will construct a 210,000-square-foot building with systems for the production of electric sports utility vehicles and pickup trucks at a plant formerly owned by Mitsubishi Motors. The $40 million project is anticipated to wrap up next summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
