India's Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved an INR$3,500 crore (US$477 million) subsidy in a push to drive exports of 60 lakh tons (6 million tons) of sugar.
Even though the subsidy has decreased this year to INR$6 (US$.082) per kilogram (Kg) of sugar from INR$10.5 (US$.14) in 2019-20, expected sugar production for this year is 310 lakh (31 million) tons against the demand of 260 lakh (26 million) tons.
