Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Citing data from Industrial Info, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said planned second-quarter 2021 U.S. refinery turnarounds would not have a significant impact on the U.S. fuel supply, including gasoline, jet fuel and distillates.

Planned second-quarter outages in the Gulf Coast region, which contains more than half the nation's refining capacity, are less than 5% of overall capacity. The EIA noted that the region's product inventories were above 10-year averages and would likely be able to cover what is lost from turnarounds.

"To avoid supply disruption, refiners usually schedule planned outages for maintenance in late fall or late winter, when U.S. demand for petroleum products is relatively low and petroleum product inventories or imports could cover the temporarily reduced supply, the EIA said in a recent Today in Energy report. "Our analysis considers planned outages as reported by Industrial Info Resources (IIR)." The Gulf Coast ships excess product to regions like the Midwest, where, although inventories are lower than average and planned turnarounds are higher than average, the EIA does not anticipate upcoming supply problems.

Attachment Industrial Info is tracking about 25 planned turnaround events for major units such as crude units, fluid catalytic crackers, hydrocrackers, etc.) at U.S. refineries in the second quarter, which compares similarly to last year.
