Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The candy and confectionery sector has been challenged by changes in consumer behavior amid the COVID-19 pandemic, as more people resort to online grocery shopping, which puts a dent in impulse buying of sweets.
Even so, the industry saw sales totaling $36.7 billion in the U.S. last year, according to the National Confectioners Association, which forecasts sales to grow to $39.5 billion by 2025. Manufacturers of chocolate, candy, gum and mints directly employ nearly 54,000 people across the U.S., with more than 600,000 jobs supported in related industries, according to the trade group, adding that its members export nearly $2 billion in chocolates and confectioneries to destinations across the globe.
According to Candy Industry, a trade publication, sales of chocolate and non-chocolate products have risen in recent months. But gum, breath fresheners and mints have struggled since the start of the pandemic, as consumers spend more time at home.
Industrial Info is tracking more than $500 million worth of active candy and confectionery project activity in the U.S. and Canada.
