Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Much like its malleable output, the U.S. plastic and rubber product market is constantly adapting to whatever changes emerge in the other industrial sectors it services. Lately, technological change in the automotive and logistics markets have forced plastic and rubber product developers to be more creative in their efforts. Industrial Info is tracking more than $3.8 billion worth of active and planned plastic and rubber product-manufacturing projects across the U.S. that are expected to see development from October through December.

More than 40% of the total investment in these projects is attributed a single tire-manufacturing project: Hankook Tire & Technology Company Limited's (Seongnam-si, South Korea) $1.6 billion expansion of a radial tire-manufacturing plant in Clarksville, Tennessee. Hankook, which is asking Tennessee for a "fast track" grant for the expansion, aims to double the facility's annual production of tires to 12 million units, which would double the entire company's domestic output of passenger car and light truck tires. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can learn more from Industrial Info's detailed project report.
Other tire-manufacturing projects that could see development in the fourth quarter include Tin Thanh Group's (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) proposed tire plant in Fairfax, South Carolina, which would manufacture and retread commercial vehicle tires and serve as the base for the company's commercial tire leasing program. Subscribers can learn more from Industrial Info's detailed project report.
With much of the domestic auto industry turning its focus to electric vehicles (EVs), it makes sense that materials for EV parts, such as lithium-ion batteries, would have a presence in the market for plastic and rubber products. Semcorp Global Limited (Yuxi, China) is proposing a separator film-manufacturing plant in Sidney, Ohio, which would service the EV market, as well as the markets for consumer electronics and energy-storage systems. Separator films are designed to keep electrode material within the batteries separated and allow lithium ions to move freely between the cathode and anode components. Subscribers can learn more from Industrial Info's detailed project report.
"Our Sidney site will be America's largest manufacturer of separator film for EV batteries," said Paul Lee, the chief executive officer of Semcorp. The company is the world's largest producer of separator film lithium-ion batteries, with 5 billion square meters in annual base film production capacity across six manufacturing facilities, according to its website. Altogether, Semcorp plans to add 8 billion square meters of capacity over the next four years.
Other battery-related projects in the plastics and rubber sector include Donghee Industrial Company Limited's (Gyeonggi-do, South Korea) proposed expansion of a battery case-manufacturing plant in Auburn, Alabama, which will increase production of cases to support and protect battery packs for EVs made at three Hyundai and Kia plants. Subscribers can learn more from Industrial Info's detailed project report.
Among the projects most likely to begin construction in the fourth quarter is Spal Automotive ASA's (Correggio, Italy) plastic injection-molding and fan-assembly plant in Ankeny, Iowa, which services the market for automobile fans, and Mattr Infratech's (Toronto, Ontario) fiberglass composite tank-manufacturing plant in Blythewood, South Carolina, which produces ground-storage tanks for the retail fuel, stormwater and wastewater markets. Both projects are expected to see completion around the end of 2024. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Iowa and South Carolina projects.
"This year we will be further improving our plastic injection molding department by automating the process of packing small parts of our low tonnage presses of 55 and 100 tonnes," Spal said on its website. "On average, our injection-molding [business] sees around 4,000 molds changed every year, 6 million parts produced every month, and around 26 tonnes of thermoplastic material processed every day."
