Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than 200 active projects at plastic injection-molding plants across the U.S. Injection molding, as it sounds, involves the injection of melted plastic into a mold to take a particular shape. Many of the injection-molding projects being tracked by Industrial Info are for automotive and pharmaceutical components.
Thanks to a large, three-phase project, Iowa leads the nation in terms of the total investment value of these projects, although it does not have the highest number of them--that honor that is reserved for Ohio, where Industrial Info is tracking 25 planned maintenance projects, mostly for later this year.
The Iowa project that leads to that state's top spending status comes from the U.S. branch of Italian auto parts maker Spal Automotive S.R.L. (Correggio) at a grassroot injection-molding and fan-assembly plant in Ankeny, just north of Des Moines. Spal designs and manufactures axial fans and centrifugal blowers for cars, buses, off-road vehicles, trucks and more, and plastic injection molding is part of the manufacturing process.
Spal has had a presence in Ankeny since 2004 and previously distributed Italian-manufactured parts from its headquarters there. The new, 215,000-square-foot facility will not only be the company's new U.S. home, but its first U.S. manufacturing base, where it will produce cooling fans for electric vehicles made by a "major U.S. auto manufacturer," according to a company press release. Phase I construction is in the process of starting and is expected to last about a year.
But that may not be the entire story for the plant. While plans are tentative, Spal could kick off an expansion of the facility to boost production, starting late next year, with construction lasting into 2026. A potential third phase of construction could be launched in subsequent years, although Industrial Info has given this a low probability (0-69%) of beginning as planned. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project reports on the three construction phases.
Another auto parts manufacturer is wrapping up a renovation for a plant that will feature plastic injection-molding in Capac, Michigan. Axiom Group (Aurora, Ontario) acquired the 123,000-square-foot former manufacturing facility with an eye toward renovating the facility to manufacture injection-molded auto components. Axiom provides a range of parts, including interior trim and exterior decoration, spoilers, shifter bezels and knobs, outlet plugs, grill bezels and much more. The company began renovating and retooling the Capac site in 2022. Turnkey contractor Lee Industrial Contracting is expected to complete the project soon. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.
Other facilities are geared toward the pharmaceutical industry, such as C&J Industries Incorporated's medical components injection-molding plant in Meadville, Pennsylvania. Last year, the company began expanding the building with a 25,000-square-foot metal-clad connector building that will serve as a cleanroom and house new equipment for increased production. C&J manufactures everything from micro-surgical components to large cabinetry parts. The project is reaching its conclusion. Subscribers can click here to learn more.
MGS Manufacturing Group Incorporated (Germantown, Wisconsin) also is broadening its injection-molding activity with the expansion of its plant in Germantown. MGS manufactures a range of plastic components from insulin pen injectors to hearing aids, and the 118,000-square-foot expansion will connect buildings, allowing for the additional production of injection-molded plastic components, tooling and equipment for the healthcare industry, including those used for COVID-19 diagnostics and research. The project began last year and is expected to wrap up in early 2025. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.
While many of the injection-molding projects being tracked are for the medical and automotive sectors, plenty more are for other purposes. Creative Blow Mold Tooling (Lees Summit, Missouri), for example, manufactures a range of products across all industries, with a specialty in plastic bottle blow molds. The company has manufactured containers and bottles for products as diverse as Folgers coffee, Tide laundry detergent and Armor-All car-cleaning wipes. Late last year, the company began constructing a 24,000-square-foot grassroot injection molding plant in Troy, Illinois, expanding its U.S. footprint. General contractor Shore Builders Incorporated is expected to finished with the plant in the coming months. Subscribers can click here to learn more.
In addition to many capital projects, Industrial Info also is tracking more than $200 million worth of planned maintenance projects at U.S. injection-molding sites. Due to the sector's association with the automotive industry, most of these projects are concentrated in the traditional hub for U.S. vehicle production, the Great Lakes region.
