Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Bechtel Group Incorporated (San Francisco, California) recently earned top honors from Engineering News-Record, which named the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) leader as the top U.S. contractor for a 19th consecutive year. The status is reflected in a growing slate of work in the energy industry, particularly in natural-gas fired, combined-cycle (NGCC) power and liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects in the U.S. and Canada. Industrial Info is tracking more than $142 billion in active projects involving Bechtel, including $10.72 billion worth that are set to finish construction by the end of the year.
Bechtel is performing EPC services for Advanced Power AG's (Zug, Switzerland) $800 million Carroll County Energy Center in Carrollton, Ohio, which is expected to wrap up construction late this year. The NGCC facility will generate 700 megawatts (MW) from two combustion turbines, each with a 210-MW capacity, and a 280-MW steam turbine, all provided by General Electric (NYSE:GE). For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Earlier this year, Bechtel commenced construction on another project for Advanced Power: the $1.4 billion Cricket Valley Energy Center in Dover Plains, New York, another NGCC facility that will generate 1,100 MW from three combustion turbines, each with a capacity of 200 MW, and a 133.2-MW steam turbine, also from GE. Bechtel currently expects the plant to be completed in the first quarter of 2020. But Bechtel is expected to soon finish remaining work on the $1.2 billion dismantlement and demolition of the brownfield site that will host the Cricket Valley Energy Center. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports for the Cricket Valley plant and the demolition project, as well as January 26, 2017, article - Bechtel to Begin Work on Cricket Valley Energy Center in New York, and April 24, 2017, article - GE Bolsters Backlog to More than $25 Billion with Natural Gas, Renewable Orders.
In Canada, Bechtel is finishing up EPC services on Fortis Incorporated's (TSX:FTS) (St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador) $350 million Train 2 addition at the Tilbury Island Micro LNG Liquefaction Plant in Delta, British Columbia. The unit is expected to produce 250,000 metric tons per year of LNG, and is accompanied by a $40 million storage tank addition that will add 1 billion cubic feet per day of storage capacity. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the LNG plant and the storage tank.
In South America, Bechtel achieved mechanical completion at BHP Billiton plc's (NYSE:BHP) (Melbourne, Australia) $2.1 billion seawater desalination plant near Antofagasta, Chile, which is expected to supply water to a nearby BHP copper mine, as well as an accompanying $600 million seawater pipeline, which will connect the desalination plant with the mine. Both components are in their final commissioning stages. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the desalination plant and the pipeline.
But the highest-valued projects involving Bechtel can be found along the U.S. Gulf Coast, where the markets for LNG and petrochemicals are booming. Two closely watched projects, Cheniere Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:LNG) (Houston, Texas) $2.4 billion Train 4 at the Sabine Pass LNG Production Plant in Cameron, Louisiana, and Exxon Mobil Corporation's (NYSE:XOM) (Irving, Texas) ethylene unit addition at the olefins complex in Baytown, Texas, are expected to wrap up construction in the third quarter.
The 4.5 million-ton-per-year Train 4 is expected to bring LNG production at Sabine Pass to 18 million tonnes per year; the 3 billion-pound-per-year Baytown unit will provide feedstock to a related addition at ExxonMobil's Mont Belvieu facility, which is expected to produce 2.86 billion pounds per year.
