Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Hurricane Idalia is expected to become a Category 3 hurricane, with sustained winds of at least 111 miles per hour, before it hits Florida early Wednesday. Evacuation orders were under way in several counties, including Citrus, Dixie, Gulf, Lafayette, Levy, Pasco, Pinellas and Suwannee. In addition to high winds, the storm will carry storm surges of 12 feet or more in some areas and torrential rainfall.

Metals & Minerals
As of Tuesday, Industrial Info was reporting only 12 outages among Metals & Minerals Industry plants in advance of the storm, with the bulk of them in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties. Ash Grove Cement Company (Overland Park, Kansas) said it was monitoring the situation and planned to keep its Sumterville and Brandford locations open at this time.

Oldcastle BuildingEnvelope (Dallas, Texas) closed its Tampa flat glass facility Tuesday morning. Cardinal Glass Industries Incorporated (Eden Prairie, Minnesota) closed its laminated glass plant Tuesday afternoon.

Trademark Metals Recycling LLC (Tampa) has closed its scrap metal recycling plants in Clearwater and Pinellas Park through Thursday as a precaution.

Many companies located in or around the mandatory evacuation zones are taking a wait-and-see approach while allowing employees living in the zones to leave early and prepare for the storm. Nutrien (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) and The Mosaic Company (Tampa) plan to keep their phosphate mines operating; however, each site is preparing for the storm and is asking all nonessential employees to work from home the rest of the week. Nucor Corporation's (NYSE:NUE) (Charlotte, North Carolina) steel rebar micro mill in Frostpoint also has no plans to close at this time.

Pharmaceutical & Biotech
Idalia is projected to make landfall in Florida's Big Bend region, where there aren't many life science companies. However, five of the 12 major manufacturing facilities in the Tampa Bay region are closing in preparation for the storm. These include two Bausch + Lomb facilities, Oscor Incorporated (Palm Harbor, Incorporated), Formulated Solutions LLC (Largo, Florida) and West Pharmaceutical Services Incorporated (West Whiteland Township, Pennsylvania). In the Florida Panhandle, Trulieve Cannabis Incorporated in Quincy will have a skeleton staff but will remain operating. Inland, within the Gainesville/Alachua county region, all facilities are remaining open.
