The Great Lakes region is the traditional home of the U.S. automotive industry, and the number of planned project starts in this sector easily eclipses other sectors. Among the largest automotive project starts being tracked in the region is Lordstown Motors Corporation's (Mason, Ohio) renovation of a manufacturing plant in Warren, Ohio, to produce electric pickup trucks. The project will take place at the site of a former General Motors (NYSE:GM) (Detroit, Michigan) plant and entails converting the existing 6.2 million-square-foot stamping and assembly plant with new production and auxiliary equipment to produce electric pickups. The project originally was planned to kick off in the second quarter, but this was pushed out to later this summer due to social distancing requirements brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Several smaller automotive projects are set to kick off in the region, including Flex-N-Gate Corporation's expansion of its automotive parts manufacturing plant in Royal Oak, Michigan, which entails demolishing a 17,000-square-foot building and constructing a nearly 66,000-square-foot expansion that includes warehousing space, a fabrication building and an employee support building. The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Data centers have become imperative during this time of online communication and e-commerce, and among the largest projects planned to kick off in the region is Facebook Incorporated's (NASDAQ:FB) (Menlo Park, California) grassroot data center in DeKalb, Illinois, about 65 miles west of the heart of Chicago. The $800 million project entails constructing two data center buildings totaling 971,280 square feet. The project is the first phase of a larger plan. A second and third phase, which could begin construction in a couple of years, would expand the facility further. Phase I is expected to wrap up in the first quarter of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Phase I, Phase II and Phase III.
In the semiconductors and computers sector, Industries de Nora SpA (Milan, Italy) plans to expand its electrode manufacturing plant in Mentor, Ohio, about 25 miles northeast of Cleveland. The project includes a 19,000-20,000-square-foot building addition and the installation of two new production lines and one relocated one. The project is planned to kick off late in the quarter, for completion by the end of the year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Other manufacturing projects include the warehouse expansion for a plastic bottles manufacturing plant in Seymour, Indiana. Silgan Holdings (NASDAQ:SLGN) (Stamford, Connecticut), a consumer goods packaging producer, will construct a 204,000-square-foot warehouse building to support manufacturing growth of packaging in sectors such as health care, food, personal care and automotive. FBPH Incorporated (Seymour) and Tarr Group LLC (Zionsville, Indiana) are engineers on the project, which is expected to kick off later this summer and be completed in the summer of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
