Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--U.S. renewable-energy developer rPlus Energies (Salt Lake City, Utah) said late last week that it has signed a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with electric utility Idaho Power (Boise, Idaho) for output from the 200-megawatt (MW) Pleasant Valley Solar project in Boise--which also will provide power to a new data center from Facebook parent company Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California).
In a press release, rPlus Energies, a subsidiary of Gardner Group (Boise), said construction on Pleasant Valley is expected to begin later this year. The company also said Sundt Renewables (Tempe, Arizona), a subsidiary of Sundt Construction (Sundt), will provide engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here for the detailed project report.
"The Pleasant Valley Solar project was awarded a PPA through a negotiated process with Meta (formerly the Facebook company) and Idaho Power," according to the press release. This PPA was made possible through the collaborative efforts between Meta and Idaho Power to develop a special Energy Services Agreement (...) The project will deliver energy to the Idaho Power system and contribute to Meta's goal to support 100% of its operations with renewable energy."
Idaho Power is involved in the purchase, sale, generation, and transmission and distribution (T&D) of electricity in eastern Oregon and southern Idaho; the utility said Pleasant Valley is the largest contracted solar facility in its system. Industrial Info is tracking $6 billion worth of active projects attributed to Idaho Power--which includes $4.3 billion for T&D and $1.75 billion for power generation. Subscribers can click here for a full list of projects. Idaho Power is a subsidiary of Idacorp Incorporated (NYSE:IDA) (Boise).
According to the press release, output from Pleasant Valley will go into the same grid that would support Meta's new, 960,000-square-foot data center in Kuna, in the Boise metropolitan area. The four-phase, $800 million project is in its planning stages. In December last year, Meta announced it would slow construction on the facility to help redesign it for artificial intelligence workloads but remains committed to its development. Gardner, rPlus Energies' parent company, is the project's real estate developer. Meta has signed other PPAs, including a series of agreements with renewable-energy company Apex Clean Energy (Charlottesville, Virginia) for both wind and solar power. For more information on these as well as more information on Meta's contracted clean energy, see Industrial Info's February 2, 2023, article - Apex Clean Energy Adds to PPA Portfolio with Meta.
Industrial Info is tracking two other utility-scale projects from rPlus Energies, both of which are in Utah. Construction on the 120-MW, $145 million Appaloosa Solar Plant in Cedar City, is underway. Completion is expected by the end of the year. In addition, the $750 million Green River solar-plus-storage project in Emery County, is expected to kick off in June. The facility would provide 400 MW of solar generation and feature a 200-MW, 400-megawatt-hour iron-lithium battery energy storage system (BESS).
