Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Indiana has seen an influx of industrial project activity, resulting in more than $10 billion worth of projects that are under construction. The Industrial Manufacturing Industry takes the lead in overall project value. The projects underway in the state vary greatly in type, ranging from air hubs to automotive facilities to solar power plants.

By far the largest project underway in the Hoosier State is FedEx Corporation's (NYSE:FDX) (Memphis, Tennessee) expansion of its international air hub near the Indianapolis International Airport. According to Robert Brown, senior manager of operations at the hub, at the start of the project, the facility could process 99,000 packages per hour. Upon completion in 2023, he said, "at maximum capacity, we'll be up to 147,000 packages per hour." The project entails the construction of 16 aircraft gates, two new package sorting facilities, a new refrigerated building for perishable shipments and a new building to handle truck deliveries. According to Indianapolis Business Journal, the FedEx project is being driven by an increase in e-commerce, and the leader in this field, Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington), is not without its own in activity in the state. In Merrillville, Indiana, near Lake Michigan and about 40 miles southeast of Chicago, Illinois, Amazon is building a grassroot delivery hub of more than 141,300 square feet to support last-mile delivery operations in the surrounding area. The project kicked off earlier this year and is expected to be completed by yearend. Subscribers can click here to see the project report.

Nearly $1 billion in Power Industry projects are under construction in Indiana, with solar and wind projects accounting for the largest in size. In Chalmers, EDP Renewables North America (Houston, Texas) is constructing the Indiana Crossroads Windfarm. The facility will use 80 3.7-megawatt (MW) turbines to generate about 300 MW. The project was delayed because of COVID-19, but construction kicked off last summer, and the windfarm is expected to be completed by the end of this year. IEA White Construction (Clinton, Indiana) is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can click here for the detailed project report.

In Losantville, about 70 miles west of Indianapolis, EDP is underway with the Riverstart photovoltaic solar farm, which will use approximately 670,000 solar panels to generate about 200 MW. Construction kicked off earlier this year, with Ames Construction Company (Burnsville, Minnesota) providing EPC, and is expected to be completed by yearend. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

As part of the Great Lakes region, Indiana has a firm footing in the automotive sector, and Stellantis NV (NYSE:STLA) (Amsterdam, Netherlands), the company resulting from this year's merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV and PSA Group, is expanding and retooling its transmission manufacturing plant in Kokomo. The project includes constructing a 60,000-square-foot building expansion and installing a new engine line to allow the assembly of a new model of turbo engine. The project kicked off late last year and is expected to be completed next summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

The Food & Beverage Industry also makes a strong showing in the state. Randy Godet, Industrial Info's vice president of research for Food & Beverage, has noted that one of the biggest trends being observed in the industry is the move toward plant-based foods as a substitute for traditional protein products. In Indianapolis, Maple Leaf Foods (TSX:MFI) (Mississagua, Ontario), a traditional meat company that has been branching into plant-based proteins in recent years, is converting a facility to produce tempeh (soybean-based protein) products.
