Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Water is scarce and conservation activities are increasing. Entities in the global industrial sector are developing and upgrading wastewater treatment facilities, either as an environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiative, or to reuse wastewater internally. The wastewater treatment process removes contaminants, pollutants and sewage from used water, before the water is reused or released back into existing waters. Industrial Info is tracking more than 2,300 wastewater treatment-related projects at industrial plants across the globe worth about US$13 billion, nearly half of which is under construction.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), "if wastewater is not properly treated, then the environment and human health can be negatively impacted. These impacts can include harm to fish and wildlife populations, oxygen depletion, beach closures and other restrictions on recreational water use, restrictions on fish and shellfish harvesting and contamination of drinking water."

Russian state-owned energy company Gazprom is at work on constructing a US$347.8 million wastewater treatment facility addition at its 400,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Omsk Refinery, which is intended to replace the existing treatment facility that has been in use since 1955. The addition would treat 3,700 cubic meters per hour of wastewater from refining units to minimize environmental impacts. The completion is expected in October 2023. In Chile, a US$50 million second-phase wastewater treatment expansion at Celulosa Arauco y Constitucion SA's (Arauco) (Santiago, Chile) 650,000 ton-per-year Arauco Pulp Mill is expected to wrap up by the end of the year. The project involves expanding an existing treatment facility to avoid environmental impacts. The company is a subsidiary of Empresas Copec (Las Condes), one of the largest players in the global Pulp & Paper market. Click here for the project report.

Industrial Info is tracking 12 active wastewater treatment projects in the U.S., worth US$174.8 million. These include HF Sinclair Corporation's (NYSE:DINO) (Dallas, Texas) water treatment infrastructure upgrades at its 25,000-BBL/d Casper Refinery in Wyoming. The project entails rearranging piping, replacing the water intake system and improving sewer functionality to increase efficiency, but it is in an early study phase, where plenty of factors could alter or eliminate the proposed investment. Saudi Arabia leads all countries in terms of total investment value, with US$1.6 billion worth of wastewater treatment projects. Private power and water utility company Marafiq (Yanbu) plans to kick off a US$202 million Phase 4 expansion at the Jubail Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant - 8 next month, in order to increase the capacity of 148,000 cubic meters per day to 273,000 cubic meters per day. The project is expected to wrap up in late 2023. Subscribers to the GMI Project Database can click here for the detailed project report.
