Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--ITC Holdings Corporation's (NYSE:ITC) (Novi, Michigan) Lake Erie Connector transmission line received a much-needed jolt in the arm last week when it received a Presidential Permit, which is required for international border-crossing projects, from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The underwater transmission line would connect Ontario's markets with the U.S. Eastern Seaboard. Industrial Info is tracking $1.05 billion in projects associated with the transmission line, and $1.14 billion in other active ITC projects.
ITC's $1 billion Lake Erie Connector project would run 73 miles--13 underground, 60 underwater--from a converter station in Haldimand County, Ontario, through Lake Erie to a converter station in Erie, Pennsylvania. The 1,000-megawatt (MW), bi-directional, high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) line would be the first direct link between the Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) and PJM Interconnection LLC (PJM) markets, the latter of which ensures reliability for more than 61 million people in the Eastern U.S. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
ITC also is planning to build the $25 million Haldimand Converter Station in Nanticoke, Ontario, and the $25 million Lake Erie Converter Station in Erie, Pennsylvania, the first of which will convert 500-kilovolt (kV) AC power to 320-kV DC power, while the Erie station will convert 320kV DC power to 345kV AC power. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Ontario and Pennsylvania substations.
ITC said in its press release that it has completed the necessary system impact studies in IESO and PJM, and it will continue seeking necessary permits throughout 2017, including those from Canada's National Energy Board, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Pennsylvania's Department of Environmental Protection, after which it will begin construction. The company hopes to have the project in service in late 2020.
"This is a significant step in our development of the ITC Lake Erie Connector, and we appreciate the DOE's judicious response to our application," said Terry Harvill, the president of ITC Grid Development, in a press release. "This project would provide a direct, efficient and controllable path for energy and capacity to flow between the PJM and IESO systems. By facilitating the import and export of energy between the U.S. and Ontario, the line can help optimize renewable resources and satisfy renewable energy requirements in the U.S."
ITC's highest-valued project under construction is the $130 million Winco to Lime Creek Transmission Line in Iowa. The 55-mile, overhead HVDC line would begin at ITC's $25.5 million Winco Substation near Ledyard, Iowa, also under construction, to ITC's existing Lime Creek Substation in Colby, Iowa. The line and the new substation will carry 345 kV. For more details, including current schedules and contractor contact information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Winco-Lime Creek line and the Winco Substation.
Other hotspots for ITC include Minnesota, where the company is at work on the $55 million Lakefield-Huntley Transmission Line, which runs 57 miles from ITC's existing Lakefield Junction Substation to the new, $20 million Huntley Substation in Winnebago, Minnesota. The overhead, HVDC line is part of the broader Minnesota-Iowa Transmission Line Project. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Lakefield-Huntley line and the Huntley Substation.
