Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Global renewable energy developer Lightsource bp (London, England) recently placed into service its second solar power facility in Pueblo, Colorado. Both solar farms have power purchase agreements in place with Xcel Energy Incorporated (NASDAQ:XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota), which is aiming to reduce its carbon emissions.

Construction on Lightsource bp's Sun Mountain solar project kicked off in December 2021. The facility uses approximately 700,000 solar panels to achieve a nameplate generating capacity of more than 260 megawatts (MW).

The project joins Lightsource bp's other Pueblo solar project, the Bighorn solar plant, which entered commercial operation in late 2021 and has a nameplate generating capacity of 300 MW. The Bighorn solar farm delivers electricity to EVRAZ Rocky Mountain Steel's (Chicago, Illinois) steel mill in the city.

Both of Lightsource bp's Pueblo solar facilities have power purchase agreements in place with Xcel Energy, which is aiming for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Xcel's Colorado Energy Plan specifically calls for reducing carbon emissions in the state 85% by 2030 and providing power from approximately 80% renewable sources, including 1,600 MW of large-scale solar power.

As Xcel strives toward its emissions-reduction goals, the company is at work on renewable energy projects of its own, including a windfarm repower project in its home state of Minnesota, near Dexter. The project entails installing 67 General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Boston, Massachusetts) turbines, each rated at 1.6 MW, to achieve a nameplate generating capacity of about 107 MW. Construction kicked off in late 2022 and is expected to be completed toward the end of this year. Subscribers can click here for the full report.

Industrial Info is tracking several Lightsource bp solar projects in the U.S., with a combined total investment value of $4.4 billion. Among the company's projects presently underway is the Honeysuckle photovoltaic solar plant near New Carlisle, Indiana. The project kicked off in the fourth quarter of last year, and upon completion, which is expected in early 2024, the facility will use 365,000 solar modules to achieve generation of 150 MW. Among the company's projects planned to kick off this year is the Starr Ranch solar project near Roma, Texas, in the southern tip of the state near the Mexico border. Construction is expected to kick off in the coming months. SOLV Energy LLC (San Diego, California) will provide engineering, construction and procurement services for the project, which is expected to take about a year to complete.
