The COVID-19 pandemic has hit sugar industry investors hard. Fifty-six of 146 sugar mills in India's Maharashtra state have already maxed out their crushing capacity, leaving the farmers in ambiguity about their ripe fields. According to the Indian Sugar Mills Association (ISMA), the daily rate of crushing in the current season in Maharashtra is significantly lower than last year.
