Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Maintenance activity in Australia's Oil & Gas Industry is a big business that can only get bigger with the industry boom. Alliances are formed between the big oil and gas production companies, and storage terminal owner/operators, whereby the maintenance provider will provide all maintenance services as required for a multitude of industrial plants under the one agreement.

When Australians working within the Oil & Gas Industry think of maintenance service providers, there are six that come to mind immediately: Transfield Services (ASX:TSE) (Sydney Australia), United Group Limited (UGL) (ASX:UGL) (Sydney), Monadelphous (ASX:MND) (Perth), Downer Group (ASX:DOW) (Sydney) and Wood Group PSN (WG:LSE) (Aberdeen, Scotland), and Clough AMEC, a longstanding joint venture between Clough (ASX:CLO) (Perth) and AMEC plc (AMEC:LSE) (London, England).

Clough AMEC has held the major maintenance contract at ConocoPhillips' Bayu-Undan facilities since July 2004. The most recent contract extension, awarded in November 2013, will see it through to the end of 2015. Clough AMEC provides asset integrity management and implementation services.

The Bayu-Undan facilities comprise drilling, production and processing (DPP), and compression, utilities and living quarters (CUQ), to form the central production and processing complex, situated at the Bayu-Undan natural gas and condensate field. These facilities, along with an unmanned wellhead, and the Liberdade floating, storage and offloading facility, are 500 kilometers offshore Darwin. Natural gas from the field is sent to the Darwin liquefied natural gas (LNG) production plant.

Monadelphous was awarded the contract for the provision of maintenance and specialist services in 2006, when the Darwin LNG plant began operations. Monadelphous manages all aspects of structural, mechanical, piping, electrical, instrumentation and civil works, along with shutdown planning, management and execution. Monadelphous is in competition with several other maintenance service providers for the main maintenance contract this quarter.

ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) (Houston, Texas) has been investigating options for changing the way that maintenance and operations are managed at the onshore Darwin LNG plant and the offshore Bayu-Undan central production and processing complex. It is expected that ConocoPhillips will select a company capable of taking care of maintenance for the onshore and offshore facilities, as opposed to having two separate agreements. There also will be a brownfield engineering services contract awarded.

Transfield Services is the maintenance services contractor for Origin Energy's (ASX:ORG) (Sydney) Otway and BassGas operations. Transfield performs mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, rigging, scaffolding, non-destructive testing (NDT), piping, welding and additional services for general maintenance and shutdowns at four facilities.

A joint venture between Australia's United Group Limited (UGL) and Kaefer Group (Bremen, Germany) have been providing maintenance and minor project services to ExxonMobil Australia's (NYSE:XOM) Gippsland oil and gas operations since July 2010. The contract breadth includes 21 offshore production platforms in the Gippsland Basin, the Long Island Point natural gas liquids (NGL) Fractionation Plant, Longford Natural Gas Plant and the Barry Beach Marine Terminal.

UGL signed an agreement with Royal Dutch Shell plc (NYSE:RDS.A) (The Hague, Netherlands) at the beginning of this year to perform maintenance at all of the storage terminals on the east coast. This agreement held ground when Vitol Group (Rotterdam, Netherlands) (under newly formed Australian subsidiary, Viva Energy) acquired all of Shell's Australian Downstream Business. The contract is for a period of three years, with two-year extension options.

Long-term service agreements have been getting longer in Australia, with maintenance services contracts for the above-mentioned companies all contracted for multiple three-year-plus contracts (with extension options). This article mentions just a portion of the long term service agreements for maintenance in the Australian Oil & Gas Industry.
