Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking nearly $9 billion worth of projects that are presently under construction in Maryland. Although a light rail project leads in terms of overall investment value, the state's industrial sector is quite diverse, encompassing data centers, solar farms and manufacturing into its industrial undertakings.

The Maryland Transit Administration has been at work since 2018 on extending Baltimore's Purple Line on the city's light rail transit system. Since that time, a great deal of progress has been made on the 16.2-mile extension, and construction is well advanced, with approximately two years remaining until completion. The extension runs from Bethesda, inside the Baltimore Beltway circling the city, to New Carrollton in Prince George's County. The additional 16.2 miles include 21 new stations as well as one short tunnel. The substantial project, which accounts for a significant share of investment in the state, is expected to be completed in the first half of 2027. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.

Construction of data centers in Maryland has not been nearly as prevalent as what has been observed in neighboring Virginia, which is seeing a tremendous influx of the facilities, but nevertheless, data centers account for more than $1 billion of projects underway in the state. Most of this investment comes from Rowan Digital Infrastructure Limited (Denver, Colorado), which in 2024 broke ground on two initial buildings of a proposed 777,000-square-foot data center complex. Earlier this year, construction of a third, smaller building was thrown into the mix. Construction of these three buildings plus another one expected to be launched this summer represent the first phase of the campus' construction, with several subsequent expansions of the facility planned. Construction of buildings A, B and C, presently underway, is expected to be completed in the first half of next year. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the related project reports.

More renewable energy is coming to Maryland, mostly in the form of solar power. Industrial Info is tracking five solar projects that are under construction in the state, ranging in capacity from 20 megawatts (MW) on a brownfield landfill site to a 145-MW facility near Greensboro, on the eastern edge of the state near the Delaware border. The 145-MW plant comes courtesy of leading U.S. renewable power developer NextEra Energy Incorporated (Juno Beach, Florida), which lately has been pressing for an increased build-out of natural gas-fired power plants. Despite this step in the direction toward fossil fuels, NextEra still has plenty of renewable developments in the works. NextEra is employing The Ryan Company as engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the Cherrywood solar farm, which broke ground earlier this year. Ryan is placing nearly 500,000 solar panels manufactured by First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona) that will be on a single-axis tracking system. The plant is expected to go online early next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's GMI Power Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.

Home to both the National Institutes of Health and John Hopkins University, Pharmaceutical-Biotech projects contribute significantly to Maryland's industrial landscape. John Hopkins is underway with two projects at its East Baltimore campus. The larger of these has been underway since 2021 and entailed the demolition of an older building to make way for the university's new North Tower addition, a 12-story building that is being built to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver standards. Adjoining facilities are being renovated to create expanded wet and computational lab space to enhance research, and the building includes a new hospital entrance. After more than four years of demolition, construction and renovation, the project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2026. While Industrial Info is tracking no power transmission and distribution projects currently underway in Mayland, at least one company is at work on project to manufacture the power lines used in these projects. Hellenic Cables SA (Athens, Greece) late last year launched construction of a grassroot cable-manufacturing facility to produce cable used onshore and offshore power applications. With U.S. offshore wind endeavors currently facing severe headwinds from the Trump administration, Hellenic, which developed the project in part to supply the offshore wind sector, may see the plant's production confined primarily to onshore grid applications. The 580,000-square-foot facility is being developed on a 38-acre site at Wagner's Point in Baltimore, an industrial area jutting into a wide segment of the Patapsco River as it flows into Chesapeake Bay. While the $300 million project was meant in part to supply offshore projects, plenty of grid-strengthening is occurring in the vicinity so that the plant's orders should be solid. While there are no current projects, Industrial Info is tracking more than $960 million worth of planned power transmission projects in Maryland and more than $5.5 billion worth of active transmission projects in neighboring Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. Subscribers can learn more about Hellenic's project by viewing the project report.
