Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Mexico's installed electrical power capacity on the national SEN grid increased by 602 megawatts (MW) in 2012 to a total of 52.5 gigawatts (GW), according to a report from CFE, Mexico's national power utility.
In the share of power sources, thermal generation fell from 32.8 GW to 32.6 GW. Nuclear capacity was up to 1.61 GW from 1.36 GW at the end of 2011. Upgrades at the Laguna Verde plant added 255 MW of capacity.
Geothermal capacity declined in 2012 to 811 MW from 886 MW. Two of the country's oldest facilities were decommissioned. Hydropower added 44 MW to reach 11.5 GW.
The strongest growth in any of the power source sectors came from wind, which increased to 598 MW from 86.8 MW at the end of 2011. There was also an additional 777 MW of wind power generated in dedicated self-supply schemes, which were considered in the national total. Only 1 MW of solar capacity was brought onto the grid in 2012.
CFE added 561 kilometers of transmission lines in 2012 to reach a total of 50,885 kilometers, reports Business News Americas.
A previous CFE report said that power demand in Mexico increased 3% to 16.7 terawatt-hours (TWh) in November, which was up from 16.2 TWh in the same month in 2011, but down from 18.1 TWh in October 2012.
The industrial sector continued to account for the largest share of demand, with 9.76 TWh in November, up from 9.44 TWh in November 2011 and down from 10.4 TWh in October 2012. Small- and medium-size industries accounted for 63% of the sector's demand and large industries the balance.
The residential sector consumed 4.39 TWh in November, up from 4.24 TWh in November 2011 and down from 4.96 TWh in October 2012. In November, the commercial sector consumed 1.21 TWh, the service industry 706 gigawatt-hours (GWh) and agriculture 662 GWh.
CFE had 36.3 million customers in November, up from 35.3 million in November 2011 and 36.2 million in October 2012. For related information, see January 4, 2013, article - Mexico's Gas Imports and Production Rise in November, Wind Power Sets Record.
