Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--The Atiamuri Hydro Plant will undergo a major refurbishment starting first quarter of 2015. The power plant, which features four 21-megawatt (MW) turbines, was built by Mighty River Power Limited (Auckland, New Zealand) during 1953 and 1958 at Lake Atiamuri in Waikato district of New Zealand. Each unit is equipped with Francis turbines manufactured by English Electric, and ABB Generator.
The 84-MW Atiamuri hydro plant will experience a major refurbishment on all of its four units, with each unit to undergo a 6-8 months outage. The 10-yearly maintenance is a class- 4 outage and is similar to a midlife refurbishment of the hydro units, which usually involves equipment replacements, upgrades and modernization of the units.
Mighty River Power confirmed the refurbishment of all four units will take nearly 2.5 years to complete and large portion of the work will be performed by MB Century Limited (Taupo, New Zealand), while local companies will be selected for subcontracting work as required in the coming few months.
Mighty River Power made a long-term agreement with ABB New Zealand (Hamilton, New Zealand) to maintain all the nine hydro stations that are owned and operated by Mighty River Power in the North Island of New Zealand, including the Atiamuri Hydro Station. The agreement with ABB covers daily maintenance of the power plants as well as minor maintenance outages. While the minor maintenance work is conducted by ABB, Mighty River usually works with Alstom Power Limited (Hamilton, New Zealand) or MB Century for major maintenance, including the class-4 outage.
ABB is currently performing a minor outage on one of the four units at Atiamuri, which will be completed in a week's time. The major refurbishment on the first unit is scheduled to begin in January 2015. All the remaining units will have a similar refurbishment in the following years.
In the next seven to eight years, Mighty River Power plans to complete a series of refurbishment programs on the rest of its hydro plants as part of the company's flexible generation portfolio.
