Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Nevada utility NV Energy (Las Vegas) has been steadily signing power purchase agreements (PPAs) with solar developers in its home state. And Nevada certainly doesn't lack potential solar projects: Industrial Info is tracking more than 100 active solar projects in the state valued at nearly $110 billion. The vast majority of these projects have been designated by IIR as having a low probability (0-69%) of moving forward as planned, meaning that many of them won't make it off the planning table. However, NV Energy's latest PPA with renewable energy developer Arevia Power (Glendale, California) puts one of that company's projects a step closer to actually turning dirt.

NV Energy's most recent PPA is for Arevia's planned Libra solar-plus-storage project, which will be built across more than 5,100 acres of public lands managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Mineral County. The facility will have a solar generation capacity of 700 megawatts (MW) and a battery energy storage system (BESS) that will be able to provide another 700 MW in times when the sun isn't shining. The BLM held a 45-day public comment period on the project that closed in early March. The Libra project is expected to cost more than $2 billion to construct and is anticipated to be completed in 2027. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.

If the project is built in a timely and successful manner, it would be one Nevada's largest solar facilities, but competition to be the state's largest solar plant remains stiff. Industrial Info is tracking more than 20 planned solar projects in Nevada with capacities of 900 MW or greater; however, many of these have been designated as low-probability projects, although a couple of these mammoth projects stand a greater chance of moving forward than others.

Avantus (Los Angeles, California), for example, is in the early planning stage for a project only slightly smaller than Arevia's Libra plant. Avantus' Busted Butte solar-plus-storage facility in Clark County would feature 600 MW of solar generation and a 600-MW BESS unit. Construction could potentially begin next year. The solar projects presently under construction in Nevada will each provide 200 MW or less of additional solar generation capacity. These projects include NextEra Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) second-phase addition at its Yellow Pine solar facility in Clark County. Engineering, procurement and construction firm Kiewit Corporation (Lenexa, Kansas) broke ground on Phase II in 2022, and the project will increase the site's solar generation capacity by 125 MW. Phase I, which also provides 125 MW, was completed last year along with 250 MW of battery storage. Phase II is expected to be completed this summer. A few solar projects involve Nevada's substantial mining sector. Nevada Gold Mines (NGM), a joint venture of Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE:GOLD) (Toronto, Ontario) (61.5%) and Newmont Corporation (NYSE:NEM) (Denver, Colorado) (38.5%) is underway with a solar addition at the TS Power Plant in Eureka County, which will provide 200 MW of generation to the site when completed, which is expected soon. NGM has committed to reduce carbon emissions 20% by 2025, while Barrick itself aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. NGM also is modifying a coal-fired unit at the TS plant to burn cleaner natural gas, further reducing emissions. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the reports on the solar and gas modification projects.

While NGM's project is an actual utility-scale power plant, other Nevada miners are building arrays for specific mines, falling under Industrial Info's coverage of the Metals & Minerals Industry. A subsidiary of KGHM Polska Miedz S.A. (Lubin, Poland) is wrapping up construction of a 3-MW solar array at its Robinson copper-gold-molybdenum mine in White Pine County. The solar array will provide 10% of the power needed for the open-pit mine's operations.
