Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. was the strongest market for global construction firm Skanska AB (Stockholm) in the third quarter of 2023, during which the company reported a record-high order backlog. The U.S. accounted for about 57% of Skanska's operating income and about 62% of its order bookings in the third quarter, with both public and private-sector projects showing growth. Industrial Info is tracking more than $8.6 billion worth of active and planned projects across the U.S. featuring Skanska's services, more than half of which is attributed to local and suburban transportation projects.

"The active sector, civil infrastructure and social infrastructure is strong in the U.S.," said Anders Danielsson, the chief executive officer of Skanska, in a recent quarterly earnings-related conference call. "We can see a large pipeline when it comes to civil infrastructure, but also in [social infrastructure], where we are building schools, universities, hospitals, airports and so on. So that's positive. Material availability has improved. So, we can see less bottlenecks, and we can also see that material prices have leveled out in the last few quarters."
The four public transportation projects that account for most of the investment involving Skanska are located within two cities on the West Coast: Los Angeles, California, and Seattle, Washington. The company is performing design-build services for two segments of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority's ongoing subway expansion: the first, 3.9-mile extension of the Metro Purple Line, which will include twin-bored tunnels and three more stations, and 1.9 miles of double track on the Gold Line, which will include three new stations. Construction on the first section of the Purple Line extension is scheduled for completion in early 2024, and the Gold Line extension is expected to be completed toward the end of next year.

Sound Transit (Seattle), which operates the public transit system in the Seattle and Tacoma area, began construction on a multi-phase, 8.5-mile expansion of its Link Light Rail system, which connects the two cities and their environs, including the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The expansion will begin at the line's northern end in Shoreline, which is about 12 miles north of Seattle, and run about 18 miles north to Lynnwood. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the northbound and southbound segments of the expansion, which developers expect to be completed by the end of 2024.
Other infrastructure projects featuring Skanska include the Delaware River Port Authority's (Camden, New Jersey) rehabilitation of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, which links Camden and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The project, which kicked off in early 2020, involves improving the suspension cables and walkways, repainting surfaces, and repairing suspension spans and towers. Skanska is performing design-build services for the project, which is expected to wrap up in the spring. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.
Skanska also is playing a considerable role in the U.S. private sector, where Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) (Redmond, Washington) kicked off an expansion of its data center in Douglasville, Georgia, in April, with Skanska performing general construction services. The 245,000-square-foot building would be the first of four, each of roughly equal size. Subscribers can learn more from Industrial Info's project report.
Microsoft also is considering a two-phase expansion of its data center in El Mirage, Arizona. The tech giant is weighing proposals for two new buildings, each measuring about 250,000 square feet, at its existing, three-building campus, which houses hyperscale services. The El Mirage complex was conceived as part of Microsoft's Azure initiative, which offers analytic, database and artificial intelligence services to large-capacity data users, such as Fortune 500 companies. Skanska would provide design-build services. Subscribers can read detailed reports for the proposed Building 4 and Building 5.
In the power-generation sector, Siemens (Munich, Germany) hired Skanska to perform general construction services for its wind turbine blade-manufacturing plant in Portsmouth, Virginia, which started construction in July 2022 and will cater to the offshore market. Upon completion, expected in the fall of 2025, it will be the first U.S. blade-manufacturing plant for offshore windfarms. Subscribers can learn more from Industrial Info's project report.
