Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Matrix Renewables (Madrid, Spain) and rPlus Energies (Salt Lake City, Utah) last week broke ground on a new solar power facility in Idaho. When completed, the plant will be the largest solar farm in Idaho Power's (Boise, Idaho) service territory. Facebook parent Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California) has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) for the facility's output, which will go toward powering one of the company's data centers that is under construction nearby.

rPlus Energies initially was the sole developer of the Pleasant Valley solar project in Ada County, Idaho, which is Idaho's most populous county, containing its largest city, Boise. Spain's Matrix Renewables entered into the equation last month when it obtained a controlling interest in the project from rPlus, which will still hold a minority stake in the project. The facility will use ground-mounted panels on a single-axis tracking system to provide nameplate generation of 200 megawatts (MW). The project is expected to begin providing power in 2025. In May, rPlus signed a power purchase agreement with Meta Platforms for the plant's output. Meta is underway with construction of a grassroot data center in Kuna, also located in Ada County. The data center is planned to be constructed in phases, with the first stage of construction expected to be completed soon. This phase called for construction of two buildings: a 60,000-square-foot administrative building and a 415,500-square-foot data center building. Construction of the second of four planned construction phases is expected to kick off soon and is expected to be completed in the first half of next year. The Pleasant Valley solar farm joins other renewable energy projects under development in Idaho, as well as a few more projects from rPlus Energies. Idaho has a strong background of renewable energy projects, and in 2022, 75% of the state's power came from renewable resources, the fourth-highest of any state in the U.S., according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Most of the state's renewable energy comes from hydropower, which provided more than half of Idaho's total power generation in 2022.

It follows that several active projects in Idaho's renewable energy portfolio are for hydropower, although many of these projects are for large pumped-storage hydro plants that Industrial Info has deemed as having a low chance (0-69%) of moving forward as planned. More probable are upgrades and refurbishments at existing facilities, such as the planned refurbishment of the turbines at the Anderson Ranch hydropower station in Elmore County. The project entails refurbishing two 20-MW hydro turbines with Siemens (Munich, Germany) equipment, replacing runners and performing wicket gate refurbishments. The project, expected to kick off next year, will increase the plant's efficiency and extend its service life. Subscribers can click here to learn more.

Despite the dominance of hydropower in the state, some wind and solar projects are underway. Examples include Clearway Energy Group's (San Francisco, California) Cedar Creek Windfarm in Bingham County. Clearway recently closed on financing and started construction on the facility, which will include approximately 45 wind turbines, each rated at 3.4 MW, to provide nameplate generation of 152 MW. The project is expected to be completed by the end of next year. Subscribers can click here for more information.

Clearway acquired the Cedar Creek Windfarm from rPlus Energies in 2021. In addition to the Pleasant Valley solar project, other active projects from rPlus include a planned 90-MW solar farm in Prescott Valley, Arizona, construction of which is planned to start and finish next year.
