Sugar production in India is predicted to decline by 18% in the 2019-20 season to 27.3 million tons due to uncertain weather conditions. This compares with 33.2 million tons produced in 2018-19. The sugar output in Maharashtra is expected to fall from 5.83 million tons from 10.7 million tons last year. On the other hand, the crushing season in a few states, especially in Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, have kicked off earlier as compared to last season, but with a low projected output due to shortage of a cane.
