Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Global engineering and consultation leader WorleyParsons (North Sydney, Australia) reported a stronger backlog at the end of first-half 2018, and expects to see an increase in global hydrocarbons capital spending and recovery in the onshore, offshore and oil sands markets. Industrial Info is tracking nearly $140 billion in active projects involving WorleyParsons, including more than $68.6 billion worth in North America.

The biggest destination in the U.S. for WorleyParsons is Sasol Limited's (NYSE:SSL) (Johannesburg, South Africa) Lake Charles Chemical Complex in Westlake, Louisiana, which is expected to see several units start up later this year: a 1.5 million-metric-ton-per-year ethylene unit that will use ethane as its primary feedstock to feed downstream units at the complex; a 450,000-ton-per-year linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) unit; and a 142,000-metric-ton-per-year ethoxylated surfactants unit expansion, which will bring the unit's total capacity to 174,000 metric tons per year.

WorleyParsons is serving as project management consultant for the ethylene unit and LLDPE unit, and is performing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) work on the ethoxylated surfactants unit expansion. Sasol is in the process of testing safety devices, such as flares and other systems, at the massive complex. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the ethylene unit, LLDPE unit and ethoxylated surfactants unit.

WorleyParsons is serving as project management consultant on several other units at the Lake Charles Chemical Complex that are under construction and expected to wrap up in the first half of 2019: a 420,000-metric-ton-per-year low-density polyethylene (LDPE) unit; the addition of a unit to produce Guerbet alcohols, which result in low viscosity and better biodegradability; an ethoxylation (ETO) unit expansion that will add two trains to the three that currently produce alcohol ethoxylates; an EO/EG unit addition that will produce 300,000 tons per year of ethylene oxide (EO) and ethylene glycol (EG); and the addition of a Ziegler Alcohol unit that will produce 450,000 tons per year.

For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the LDPE unit, Guerbet alcohols unit, ETO unit, EO/EG unit and Ziegler Alcohol unit.

Other chemicals projects involving WorleyParsons can be found along the Texas Gulf Coast, including two projects set to begin construction before the end of the year: Bayport Polymers LLC's (Houston, Texas) unit addition at its Bayport Polyethylene Resins complex in Pasadena, which will produce 1.38 billion pounds per year of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and LLDPE, and Gulf Coast Ammonia LLC's (Miami Beach, Florida) ammonia plant in Texas City, which will produce 1.35 million metric tons per year. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the polyethylene and ammonia projects.

WorleyParsons is playing a role in nearly $53 billion worth of active Oil & Gas Industry projects across North America, including Canadian Natural Resources Limited's (NYSE:CNQ) (Fort McMurray, Alberta) $1.2 billion Kirby North steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) production field and processing plant near Fort McMurray, Alberta. Drilling at the 40,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) project began in December, three months ahead of schedule, and first oil is expected in the fourth quarter of 2019. The company expects to complete 49 net producing wells, 44 injector wells and construction of the processing plant. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

WorleyParsons is performing EPC work on Kirby North. "Cost performance [at Kirby North] remains on budget," said Tim McKay, the president of Canadian Natural Resources, in an earnings-related conference call. "The central processing facility has 95% of equipment on site, and the SAGD drilling is nearing 45%, and is targeting third-quarter 2019 to be complete."

Next door in Alaska, NANA WorleyParsons LLC, a 50:50 joint venture between NANA Development Corporation (Anchorage, Alaska) and WorleyParsons, is performing engineering work on ConocoPhillips' (NYSE:COP) (Houston) Greater Mooses Tooth Unit 1 addition at the Alpine Oil & Natural Gas Central Processing Plant in Nuiqsut. The massive project includes the construction of a new well pad with eight wells, with the longer-term goal of 33 production and injection wells, and a gathering pipeline with a capacity of 20,000 to 25,000 barrels per day (BBL/d). The project is on track to deliver its first oil in the fourth quarter and fully finish construction in second-quarter 2019. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Although the bulk of WorleyParsons' North American projects are in the Chemical Processing and Oil & Gas industries, the Metals & Minerals Industry still holds a prominent position with more than $4.7 billion worth of active projects. These include Teck Resources Limited's (NYSE:TECK) (Vancouver, British Columbia) upgrade at its Red Dog zinc and lead mill in Kotzebue, Alaska, which is designed to increase average mill throughput by about 15%, helping to offset lower grades and harder ores. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

WorleyParsons' contract backlog increased to $6.4 billion at the end of June, a 6.7% increase from the end of 2017. "In the last six months, we have seen an increase in the rate of significant awards by our customers as they make decisions on the early phases of the next cycle of investment," said Andrew Wood, the chief executive officer of WorleyParsons, in a half-year earnings report. "Looking ahead, our backlog continues to increase, indicating upward momentum in market conditions."
