Argentina's Papelera Quilmes Considers Closing Pulp & Paper Mill

A final decision on this matter will be made later this year.

The Quilmes mill was closed in April 2009 when the company announced its bankruptcy. The Argentine government invested approximately $20 million to resume the plant's operations through a financial trust. At present, the mill is not producing at full capacity, and the economic situation remains critical. Some restructuring measures are expected to be carried out in October, including the dismissal of 100 employees and a reduction in salaries. The government is also considering ceasing the production of pulp and concentrating only on paper.

Quilmes Pulp and Paper Mill is located Buenos Aires. The mill began operating in 1970 and annually produces 50,000 tons of pulp, 45,000 tons of paper, and 40,000 tons of paperboard. The mill currently employs about 800 people.
