Evonik Constructs New Plant in Argentina

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Cordoba, Argentina)--Evonik (Buenos Aires, Argentina), a multinational German company and a leader in biodiesel catalysts production, is working on the construction of a new sodium methylate plant in Puerto General San Martin, Santa Fe province, Argentina.

The new plant will demand a total investment value of about $40 million. It will be fully automated and have an annual production capacity of 60,000 metric tons per year, which will have a significant impact in a market that is becoming more concerned with the environment.

Construction of the new site was first scheduled to be complete by late 2012; however, the estimated completion date has been moved to February 2013. This delay has been caused mainly due to the strong import restrictions the Argentinean government has implemented.

Evonik together with Edeca S.A. (Santa Fe, Argentina) is performing the detailed engineering of the project, and Evonik expects to select the company that will help them execute the construction of the site, which is estimated to kick off in September 2012.

Edeca, the company currently working on the engineering of the project, may be selected to perform the construction as well.

This new site reinforces Evonik's growth in the region. The German company is also investing to expand its site in Brazil, where it is developing a surfactants unit addition in the Americana plant in Sao Paulo state. The construction of this new unit will start at the beginning of 2013, and it will be operational by August 2014.
