Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Meridian Energy Limited (Wellington, New Zealand) has been recently granted the approval to construct a 131-megawatt (MW) wind farm project in Victoria. The project, which is called Mount Mercer Wind Farm, will be located 30 kilometers south of Ballarat, Victoria. The Mount Mercer Wind Farm project was proposed during 2007 by WestWind Energy Pty Limited (Nienburg, Germany). WestWind initially owned this project. In March 2009, the project was sold to Meridian Energy Limited, and it was developed through the company's Australian Subsidiary, Meridian Energy Australia. This project has undergone several design changes down the line to meet the requirements of planning and environmental approvals. The project is now pressing ahead with construction, which was followed by the capital approvals in August 2012.

Meridian released the expressions of interest and tenders to select the contractors during May 2012, and has awarded the contracting service to RePower Australia Pty Limited (Hamburg, Germany) and Downer EDI Engineering Pty Limited (Sydney, Australia). Downer EDI Engineering is a company that provides integrated engineering, construction, commissioning services for the renewable energy industry. It will conduct civil works including site preparations for the wind farm.

The wind farm will consist of up to 64 RePower MM92 wind turbines, designed and supplied by RePower. Each turbine will be generating 2 MW each, contributing to a total installed capacity of 131 MW.

Construction of the wind farm will provide at least 200 jobs to locals, followed by 25 permanent jobs during the operation of the wind farm. According to the project spokesperson, Meridian is planning to kick off the construction in December 2012. With an overall construction period of 24 months, Meridian is hoping to start the commercial operations at the plant by December 2014.

Once built, the wind farm will be able to generate electricity to supply the needs of the entire city of Ballarat. The wind farm will also help to meet the Australian renewable energy target by causing a reduction of more than 400,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
