Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 572-megawatt (MW) Unit 4 at Muskogee Power Station (Fort Gibson, Oklahoma), which is owned by Oklahoma Gas & Electric (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma), a unit of OGE Energy Corporation (NYSE:OGE) (Oklahoma City), was shut down after the generator failed.

Plant officials say that they are continuing to investigate the cause, and that they anticipate the unit will be out of service for a few months so that they can make the necessary repairs. They hope to have the unit back in service by May 1, if there are no delays.

The unit shut down around Christmas because the generator grounded out due to a rotor failure. A complete rewind of the rotor and stator will have to be performed before the unit can be put back in service. The plant has four operational units, which total 1,889 megawatts of generating capacity. Units 5, 6 and 3 remain in service.

OG&E serves more than 789,000 customers in Oklahoma and western Arkansas, with 6,800 megawatts in diverse electric transmission and distribution systems generating electricity from natural gas, low-sulfur Wyoming coal and wind.
