Microgrids represent a large of portion of the project activity being seen in the region in the upcoming quarter. Among the largest of these is New Jersey Transit Corporation's (Newark, New Jersey) microgrid project in Newark. The generating facility will be natural gas-fired and will generate 104 to 140 megawatts (MW), providing reliable power to New Jersey Transit and Amtrak operations between New York's Penn Station and northeastern New Jersey when the centralized power grid is compromised. The project would kick off this summer, for completion by the end of 2021. Jacobs Engineering Group Incorporated (NYSE:JEC) (Dallas, Texas) is performing design engineering. The project has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $577.4 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Among the other microgrid projects is the U.S. Department of Defense's planned construction of a 21-MW photovoltaic solar system at the naval station in Newport, Rhode Island. The facility will be built across 75 acres of land owned by the naval station and will include two 10-MW installations at existing tank farms and another 1-MW installation at a landfill. Construction on the $30 million project is expected to last about a year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Among the larger planned projects in New England is General Dynamics Electric Boat Corporation's (Groton, Connecticut) plans to upgrade and retool its submarine components and shipyard manufacturing plants in Connecticut and Rhode Island. The projects have a combined TIV of $1 billion and will help the company grow its submarine construction business. General Dynamics is the primary builder of submarines for the U.S. Navy. The projects are expected to be completed next year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Connecticut and Rhode Island projects.

Semiconductor technology continues to evolve, and to keep up with the changes, GlobalFoundries (Santa Clara, California) plans to renovate and expand its manufacturing facility in Hopewell Junction, New York, about 70 miles north of New York City. The project is expected to last about three and a half years, and will establish the company's first 300-millimeter chip manufacturing facility. The project has an estimated TIV of $290 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

With the rise in e-commerce, the need for logistics and distribution centers is growing, and the region is seeing its share of these projects. In Linden, New Jersey, Advance Reality (Bridgewater, New Jersey) plans to begin construction on a logistics center this summer. The facility will be built on a 350-acre site and will include eight Class-A warehouse buildings with a total footprint of 4.1 million square feet. The facility would include more than 680 trailer parking spaces. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of next year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In Bronx, New York, Innovo Property Group (New York, New York) will begin construction on a distribution center on the 20-acre site of a former multiplex cinema. The project entails constructing a multi-story, 840,000-square-foot building. Aurora Contractors Incorporated (Ronkonkoma, New York) will be the general contractor on the project, which has an estimated TIV of $54 million. Construction is expected to take about a year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In Lockport, New York, Verizon Communications Incorporated (New York, New York) will expand its data center campus by constructing a 75,000-square-foot data hall to help enhance global data services for Yahoo!, Huffington Post, AOL and other Verizon media products. The project is expected to kick off this summer and be completed by the end of the year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
