Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking $5.2 billion in projects that are planned to kick off between now and the rest of the year in Harris County, Texas, where Houston is situated. While uncertainty about schedule changes or even potential cancellations due the COVID-19 pandemic remain, all of these projects are currently rated as having a medium (70%-80%) or high (81%-99%) probability of moving forward as scheduled. Home to several large petrochemical firms, the Chemical Processing Industry leads in the value of planned project activity, with more than $1.4 billion in planned projects.

Among two of the largest projects planned to kick off this year are a couple of Chemical projects in Pasadena. Next Wave Energy Partners (Houston) has plans to launch its Project Traveler, an ethylene-to-alkylates plant that will consume more than 1.2 billion pounds per year of ethylene feedstock to produce approximately 28,000 barrels per day (BBL/d) of alkylate, using DuPont (NUSE:DD) technology. Clough USA (Houston) is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC). For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Elsewhere in Pasadena, Celanese Corporation (NYSE:CE) (Irving, Texas) is planning construction on Project Panther, an acetic acid unit addition to produce approximately 800,000 metric tons per year, expandable to 1.2 million metric tons. The project also includes a tank farm addition. The project is planned to kick off this summer and take about two years to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Interestingly, one the largest projects planned to kick off later this year in Harris County is an expansion/renovation project for a hemp processing plant in Houston. The facility will be built on an 18-acre site formerly owned by Atlantic Coffee Solutions and involves fitting up an approximately 1.2 million-square-foot facility to process hemp biomass. However, earlier this year, Industrial Info reported that the project had been pushed back to a later start date due to a decrease in the hemp industry. The project is tentatively scheduled to kick off in the fourth quarter and be completed in the second half of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Other projects planned to kick off in the county this year include TC Energy's (NYSE:TRP) (Calgary, Alberta) planned crude oil storage terminal addition at its facility in Houston. The project entails four 350,000-barrel storage tanks with internal floating roof tanks. However, as the Oil & Gas sector has taken a hit due to COVID-19 and the Saudi Arabia-led price war, projects such as this one could be in jeopardy of being pushed back until a recovery in the market occurs. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Industrial Info is tracking more than $62 million worth of projects in Harris County that have been pushed out or otherwise affected by the coronavirus. Most of these are planned maintenance turnarounds. Examples include LyondellBasell Industries NV's (NYSE:LYB) (Houston) planned maintenance for a 2.6 billion-pound-per-year ethylene unit in La Porte. The project was planned for the third quarter, but LyondellBasell has put planning and scheduling on hold and is evaluating if the turnaround will need to be rescheduled. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
