Hurricane Sally made landfall near Gulfshores, Alabama, with winds exceeding 100 miles per hour. The slow movement of the storm is expected to drop 30+ inches of rain in the region within a few days, prompting historic-level flooding in the area and complicating access for damage assessment and transportation systems.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement (BSEE), 149 offshore Oil & Gas platforms were evacuated in advance of the storm, representing 497,092 barrels per day (BBL/d), or 26% of Gulf of Mexico crude oil production, and 759 million standard cubic feet per day (MSCFD) or 28% of natural gas production, that was shut in.

Early reports suggest damage to industrial plants is likely to be minimal, although numerous plant owners have idled production in response to the threat of flooding. Several large chemical plants that closed as a result of the storm include BASF, INEOS Phenol, Eastman Chemical; metals plants that have closed include Taber Extrusions, CMC Rebar, Boasso Global and others. In the pharmaceutical industry, GCP Labs, Ferson Technologies, Omega Protein Pegasus Labs and others closed their plants as a precaution.

Industrial Info's research teams will be following up with plants potentially impacted by the storm to identify damage and disruption to operations. Continue to visit Industrial Info's Disaster Impact Tracker for updates. For more information on the Disaster Impact Tracker, click here.
