Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Spanish production, refining and energy major, Repsol Petroleo SA, continues its push to become one of Europe's leading suppliers of renewable hydrogen with the announcement of a new project at its 220,000-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Petronor refinery in Bilbao, Spain.
The company will install the first electrolyzer in the Basque Country-region, with a capacity of 2.5-megawatts (MW) and a cost of approximately US$10 million by the time it is up and running in the second half of 2022. It is just one of a large number of hydrogen projects the company is pushing. At the presentation of its 2021-2025 Strategic Plan earlier this year, Repsol said that renewable hydrogen will be one of its strategic pillars for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
This project is included in the Basque Hydrogen Corridor (BH2C) Initiative, promoted by Petronor and Repsol to accelerate the economic recovery of the region and make Spain a leading supplier of renewable hydrogen. To date, the consortium has gathered 80 companies, institutions and research centers that plan to invest euro 1.4 billion (US$1.6 billion) until 2026. It will be spread across 40 projects throughout the hydrogen value chain.
The electrolyzer will serve Petronor's own refinery and different entities at the nearby Margen Izquierda Technology Park, including the Energy Intelligence Center and the first hydrogen plant in the Basque Country, under development by Repsol and the Basque Energy Agency (EVE). The installation of a 10-MW electrolysis unit will produce roughly 50 barrels per day of renewable net-zero emissions fuel from water and CO2 produced and captured by Petronor's Bilbao refinery, using 100% renewable electricity. After this, a larger 100-MW plant is planned by 2025. It is also planning an electrolyzer with a capacity of 100-MW at its Cartagena Industrial Complex, within the framework of the Green Hydrogen Platform of the Region of Murcia.
Repsol is the leading producer and consumer of hydrogen in Spain. Its stated goal is to become the leader for renewable hydrogen in the Iberian Peninsula, with the aim to install a capacity of 557-MW equivalent in 2025 and reach 1.9 gigawatts (GW) in 2030. To achieve this, the company aims to install a number of larger electrolyzers, while adapting conventional units for the production of renewable hydrogen through the use of biogas. Last week, the company announced it had produced renewable hydrogen using biomethane as raw material for the first time at its Cartagena Industrial Complex. The biomethane was obtained from urban solid waste, while the renewable hydrogen was used to manufacture fuels with a low carbon footprint, such as gasoline and diesel, along with kerosene for aviation. The project produced 10 tons of renewable hydrogen from 500-MWh of biomethane, while avoiding the emissions of about 90 tons of CO2.
