Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A blaze has been extinguished at a training building of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Station in Ukraine, and the facility is now under Russian control, according to news accounts.
The plant staff was onsite to ensure safe operations. Only Reactor 4 is operational, according to the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine.
Zaporozhye Nuclear Power is home to six WWER-1000 pressurized water reactors, supplied by Atommash (Volgodonsk, Rostov Oblast, Russia). Each of the reactors drive a 1,000-megawatt Kharkovsky Turbinny Zavod Steam Turbine/Generator.
The first unit started commercial operation in 1984, with the final unit starting up in 1995. The fire had raised concerns that it could have led to an explosion 10 times worse than the Chernobyl disaster.
