Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. Industrial Manufacturing Industry is gearing up for a strong start to the year, with more than $82 billion worth of projects set to kick off in first-quarter 2023. While not all of these projects will move forward as planned, many will, putting the industry on pace for a strong 2023 in the U.S.
Among the sectors showing the most spending is the automotive industry, with more than $33 billion worth of projects set to kick off in the U.S. in the first quarter. Many of these planned projects are for the manufacture of electric vehicles (EVs) or their batteries. Examples include Rivian Automotive Incorporated's (Irvine, California) battery and EV assembly plant in Social Circle, Georgia, about 50 miles east of Atlanta. The undertaking involves constructing 12 buildings with a total area of 19.8 million square feet to establish a 50-gigawatt-hour lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant and space to manufacture up to 400,000 EVs per year. According to local news media, the project will be the single-largest economic development project in Georgia's history. The project is expected to be completed in late 2024. Other EV-related projects in the cards for the upcoming quarter include General Motors Company's (NYSE:GM) (GM) (Detroit, Michigan) addition of a new battery pack module assembly line at its facility in Lake Orion, Michigan. The line will allow GM to manufacture battery cells, modules and packs for EVs, including the upcoming GMC Hummer EV pickup. Subscribers can click here for the full report.
Government incentives are encouraging semiconductor manufacturers to expand their U.S. operations in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing supply-chain issues that helped cause a global chip shortage. Among the largest U.S. projects planned to kick off in the first quarter is GlobalFoundries Incorporated's (Malta, New York) expansion of its plant in Malta, New York. The $10 billion project entails construction of building additions totaling 633,000 square feet along with utility infrastructure that will increase GlobalFoundries' production capacity for silicon-on-insulator microprocessor chips for the defense industry. Rounding out the top three sectors for upcoming U.S. manufacturing projects is construction of data centers, often by some of the best known names in the tech industry, including Apple Incorporated (NASDAQ:AAPL) (Cupertino, California) and Facebook parent Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California). In Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, Apple has plans to kick off construction on a 1 million-square-foot data center campus, planned for completion in early 2024. In Mansfield, Georgia, Meta will construct a 900,000-square-foot data center facility that will help meet demand for Facebook services. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2024. Another big player in the tech world, Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington), plans to kick off approximately $1.6 billion of U.S. projects in 1Q23, mostly in the form of fulfillment centers and data centers. One of the company's largest upcoming projects is destined for Niagara Falls, New York, where Amazon will construct a five-story, 3 million-square-foot grassroot warehouse and distribution center to help expand regional fulfillment operations. The facility will feature 55 loading docks and parking for more than 460 trailers. The project, known as Project Fifi, is expected to wrap up in early 2025. There has been a push to manufacture more solar panels in the U.S., rather than relying on imports. One company, Convalt Energy LLC (Watertown, New York), is on the bandwagon with plans to kick off construction of a grassroot solar panel manufacturing plant near Watertown, New York. The project entails constructing 315,000 square feet of buildings that will include manufacturing space, warehousing, research and development facilities, and office space. Much of the equipment is being relocated to Watertown from a former SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ:SPWR) (San Jose, California) plant that Convalt acquired in April 2021. The project is expected to be completed in late 2023. Subscribers can click here for the full report.
