Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated: Houston, Texas). The Wanapum Hydro Power Station, located in Grant County, Beverly Washington, is scheduled to have its ten existing 98-megawatt (MW) Francis hydraulic turbines replaced with ten "fish friendly" design Francis turbines. The first eight month long outage is expected to start by the second quarter of 2004. The $140 million project is scheduled for completion in 2012. The development of "fish friendly" turbine allows fish to safely pass the turbines. This strongly increases fish survival rate and improves aquatic life conditions.
Voith-Siemens Hydro Power Generation Incorporated (York, Pennsylvania) is the contractor for the project. The company is a joined-venture of Voith and Siemens, one of the worldwide leading companies for hydro power equipment.
The Wanapum Hydro Power Station is owned and operated by the Grant County Public Utility District (Ephrata, Washington), a municipal corporation of the state of Washington. Electricity is sold on a nonprofit retail basis to Grant County residents and wholesale to utilities serving customers in seven Western and Northwestern States.
