Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Spain's Abengoa (NASDAQ:ABGB) (Seville, Spain) has secured a contract to build the world's largest biomass combined-heat and power (CHP) plant in the U.K.
The Tees Renewable Energy Plant, owned by MGT Teesside, a subsidiary of MGT Power Limited (London), will have a generating capacity of 299 megawatts (MW), enough to power about 600,000 homes. Abengoa and its partner Toshiba Corporation (TYO:6502) (Tokyo, Japan) will be responsible for carrying out the engineering, design and construction of the turn-key plant, located on the Teesport estate near Middlesbrough. The plant will cost an estimated £650 million ($1 billion) to construct, and commissioning is expected to take place in 2018.
The plant will be fueled by wood pellets and chips from certified sustainable forestry sources in the U.S. and Europe, said MGT, which also claimed that regular audits will be carried out "to ensure compliance with strict sustainability criteria."
Toshiba will supply the steam turbine, while the circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler for the project will be supplied by Amec Foster Wheeler (NYSE:AMFW) (London, England). About 835 jobs will be created at the peak of construction, and more than 100 full-time jobs when the facility is operational.
"After an exhaustive selection process, we are very pleased to be taking this step with Abengoa-Toshiba today, and we have every confidence that they will deliver a construction project that will be successful both for us as owners and for the local region," said Ben Elsworth, chief executive officer of MGT Power. "We have committed to maximising opportunities for local people and companies to work on the project, and intend to follow through on that."
Councilor Sue Jeffrey, leader of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, said: "We have supported MGT Power over several years to bring this exciting project to fruition. The appointment of a lead construction contractor brings the start of work on site ever closer, and with it the promise of hundreds of construction jobs, good-quality permanent jobs, and benefits for the local supply chain."
Prior to the Tees project, Abengoa also had secured a contract to build the then-biggest biomass plant in the world in Belgium. The proposed Bee Power Gent plant will be built at the Port of Ghent, at the Ghent Coal Terminal site on the Ghent-Terneuzen canal. It will have a generating capacity of 215 MW and will provide heat for local businesses and homes.
