Air Products Nears Mechanical Construction Kick-Off for Grassroot Hydrogen Plant in Alberta

Air Products is acting as its own construction manager and plans to solicit and award the mechanical I package later this month.

Released Thursday, November 11, 2004

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Air Products and Chemicals Incorporated (NYSE:APD)(Allentown, Pennsylvania) is nearing the 75% completion mark for civil site construction activities and plans to begin building erection next month at the site of the company's planned grassroot hydrogen plant, located in Edmonton, Alberta. This new plant will be located adjacent to the Petro-Canada Incorporated (Calgary, Alberta) petroleum refinery, also located in Edmonton.

Air Products is acting as its own construction manager and plans to solicit and award the mechanical I package later this month. This package includes the boiler and ironworker awards for the steam gas hydrogen furnace and major components. The mechanical II package, which includes most of the major piping requirements, will be solicited in February 2005. The last major bid package, for electrical and instrumentation, is planned for solicitation in March 2005.

The technology for this approximately 71-million-scfd plant is being provided by Technip USA (NYSE:TKP)(San Dimas, California) under a long-term alliance agreement with Air Products to provide technology for all new hydrogen capacity globally. The Edmonton project is one of several new hydrogen units planned by Air Products in North America. There are already plans to construct a second, even larger unit at this same site, to support Petro-Canada's growth plans, as well as demand from regional merchant markets, once this initial plant is complete and operational in early 2006.
