Al Tamman Trading and Indsil Form Joint Venture Company for Ferrochrome Smelter

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In July, Al Tamman Trading Establishment LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Muscat Overseas Group (Ruwi, Oman), and Indsil Group (Coimbatore, India) announced the formation of the joint venture Al Tamman Indsil Ferrochrome LLC. The company will develop a grassroot ferrochrome smelter in Sohar, Oman, in the Sohar Industrial Zone, about 225 kilometers west of Muscat on the Gulf of Oman.

The joint venture is currently conducting a review of the project and plans to complete this and close financing in a couple of months. After approval, the joint venture will begin the selection process for engineers and contractors. If all goes according plan, construction is scheduled to begin next April. The $70 million ferrochrome smelter will be a state-of-the art facility and is expected to produce 75,000 metric tons per year of carbon ferrochrome. Carbon ferrochrome, an important element in stainless steel production, will be processed from chrome ore utilizing two 24 million-volt-ampere furnaces.

Chrome ore feedstock for the Sohar Ferrochrome Smelter will be provided from mines belonging to Al Tamman Trading Establishment, the largest producer of chromite ore in Oman. In the past two years, Oman has taken an 11% global market share of the chromite ore industry.
