Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Western Biodiesel Incorporated (High River, Alberta) has shuttered Alberta's only operational biodiesel production facility, which is located in High River, 41 miles south of Calgary. The company decided to close the plant because it was not receiving funds from the Canadian government's ecoEnergy Biofuels Program.
The ecoEnergy Biofuels Program is managed by Natural Resources Canada (NRC) and was to supply $0.20 per liter of biodiesel produced and sold. Western Biodiesel did not receive payments for the first quarter of this year and had no payments for September and October, making it difficult to pay suppliers. The company would like to reopen the plant when, and if, they receive the back-payments.
The High River plant was built under the Alberta 2007 Nine Point Bio-energy Development Plan. It was completed in January 2008 and began producing 5 million gallons of biodiesel annually from fat feedstock. The facility employed 10 people.
Currently, there are seven biodiesel plants that are planned to be constructed in the province of Alberta.
