Alstom Hydro Awarded Equipment Contract for 3,300-Megawatt Jirau Hydropower Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Energia Sustentavel do Brasil consortium has recently signed an $823 million contract with Alstom Hydro, a subsidiary of Alstom SA (EPA:ALO) (Levallois-Perret, France), to supply part of the equipment, erection and commissioning supervision for the 3,300-megawatt (MW) Jirau Hydropower Plant.

The facility will be equipped with 44 75-MW hydraulic turbine generators, of which Alstom Hydro will supply 10 bulb-type turbines and 17 generators. The power station is located 135 kilometers from Porto Velho in the northwest of Brazil on the Madeira River. In November, the consortium started site preparation. Construction is expected to begin early 2009, with the first unit operational by February 2012. Jirau Hydropower Plant and Santo Antonio Hydropower Station are both part of the 6,450-MW Madeira River Complex, a project with an investment cost of $9.8 billion. The complex located in the state of Rondonia, is considered essential by the Brazilian Government in order to help the country meet power demand.

The Santo Antonio Hydropower station will be equipped with 44 72-MW bulb-type hydraulic turbine generators, of which 19 turbines and 22 generators will be supplied by Alstom Hydro. Andritz Va Tech Hydro Gmbh & Company (Vienna, Austria) will supply 12 turbine generator sets. On May 19, 2008, Energia Sustentavel do Brasil, formed of Suez S.A.(EPA:SZE) (Paris, France), Eletrosul (Santa Catarina, Brazil), Chesf (Pernambuco, Brazil) and engineering company Camargo Correa (Sao Paulo, Brazil), won the concession auction for the construction and operation of Jirau hydropower plant.
