Ball State University, now educating over 20,500 graduate and undergraduate students, opened in 1899 as a small private school. In 1918, the campus and buildings were purchased and given to the state of Indiana. In 1965, the institution became a university. Located on a 1,035-acre residential campus, the university comprises 67 buildings, valued at $1.1 billion. The university operating budget is estimated at $243 million.
