Released Thursday, July 21, 2005

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Ball State University (Muncie, Indiana) is proposing the construction of a new $48 million coal-fired steam plant to be built at its Muncie, Indiana, campus.

The university will replace an aging coal-fired heating plant with a new coal-fired heating plant that will include the replacement of four coal-fired stoker boilers with four 100,000 lbs/hr fluidized bed boilers. This will also include the installation of a new baghouse. An engineering and construction firm should be selected in the late summer of 2005, or once approvals have been obtained. Construction is expected to begin in the fall of 2006, with overall completion slated for the fall of 2007.

Ball State University, now educating over 20,500 graduate and undergraduate students, opened in 1899 as a small private school. In 1918, the campus and buildings were purchased and given to the state of Indiana. In 1965, the institution became a university. Located on a 1,035-acre residential campus, the university comprises 67 buildings, valued at $1.1 billion. The university operating budget is estimated at $243 million.
