Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Madeira Energia SA has recently signed a $333 million contract with Andritz Va Tech Hydro Gmbh & Company (Vienna, Austria) to supply equipment, erection and commissioning supervision for the 3,150-megawatt (MW) Santo Antonio Hydro Power Plant.

The plant will be equipped with 44 72-MW hydraulic turbine generators, of which Andritz Va Tech Hydro will supply 12 bulb-type turbine generator sets. The facility is located in the northwest of Brazil in the state of Rondonia on the Madeira River. Construction on the complex is expected to begin in early 2009, and the first unit is expected to start operation in December 2012.

Last September 2008, Alstom Hydro, a subsidiary of Alstom SA (EPA:ALO) (Levallois-Perret, France), was awarded a $700 million contract by Madeira Energia SA to supply 19 bulb turbines, along with 22 generators to Santo Antonio Hydropower Station. Madeira Energia, which was created as a joint venture to build and operate the Santo Antonio hydropower station, is a consortium led by the federal power company Furnas Centrais Eletricas SA (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) with Companhia Energetica de Minas Gerais (NYSE:CIG) (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), the engineering companies Andrade Gutierrez SA (Minas Gerais, Brazil) and Grupo Odebrecht (Rio de Janeiro), and the Banif and Santander Banks.

Santo Antonio Hydropower Plant and the Jirau Hydropower Plant are part of the 6,450-MW Madeira River Complex, a project with an investment cost of $9.8 billion. The complex, located in the state of Rondonia, is considered essential by the Brazilian Government in order to help the country meet electricity demand.
