Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Assam Power Generation Corporation Limited (APGCL) (Assam, India) is adding a waste heat-recovery unit to ramp up the capacity of its natural gas-fired power station in Lakwa, Assam. This new 37.2-megawatt (MW) unit is likely to be brought on-stream by March 2011. The unit is expected to achieve full-load by May 2011.
The expansion involves installation of one steam turbine and three heat- recovery steam generators (HRSG), which would be fed with the exhaust heat from the three existing 20-MW gas turbines of Lakwa Thermal Station Phase II.
The new unit is being developed within the premises of the existing power plant, which is in Maibella village, in the Sivasagar district of the northeast Indian state. Subsequent to the commissioning of the new unit, the capacity of Lakwa power station would increase to 157.2 MW.
In 2006, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (NSE:BHEL) (New Delhi) bagged the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract, valued at $50 million, for this project. BHEL's scope of work for the contract involves all civil and electro-mechanical work.
Lakwa thermal power station is 40 kilometers to the east of Sivasagar town. The plant currently has an installed generation capacity of 120 MW, comprising seven simple-cycle combustion turbine gas-fired units, four of which have 15-MW and three of which have 20-MW capacities. The fuel requirement for the existing units is met from the gas supplied by ONGC, Oil India Gas, and Canaro.
The power generated from this steam-turbine unit will be supplied to state-run power-distributor Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) (Guwahati, Assam) through transmission systems owned by Assam Electricity Grid Corporation Limited (Guwahati, Assam).
