Australia's Ichthys LNG Project Gains Momentum as Accommodations Open

This month, 200 fly-in fly-out workers are settling into the newly built Howard Springs accommodation village near Darwin. The Howard Springs site is still under construction, with the first of four phases now complete. The continuing construction will allow for about 1,000 residents in October.

The Howard Springs accommodation village now has a cinema, cyclone shelter, medical centre and recycling plant. The dining area and large-scale kitchen is now serving new residents. A recreation area with basketball courts, an Olympic-size pool and a gymnasium are almost ready.

Accommodation modules, amounting to 1,700 rooms, for phases II and III have been installed. Internal and external fittings are close to completion. Phase IV construction, which will begin in September, comprises the remaining 800 rooms required to reach the 3,500 rooms needed.

The peak of construction on the Ichthys project's onshore development will be reached in 2015.

The foundation phase of Ichthys will supply 8.4 million metric tonnes per annum of LNG to the market from the end of 2016. Ichthys also will provide 1.6 million metric tonnes of LPG per year and 100,000 barrels of condensate at peak capacity. The project is by far the biggest oil and gas industry project in the Northern Territory. The first gas to the market is anticipated for the end of 2016.
