Austrian Power Company Opens Final Tenders for Pumped-Storage Hydropower Station in the Alps

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The two Austrian hydropower plant groups Malta and Reisseck/Kreuzeck, each with capacities greater than 1,000 megawatts (MW) belong to the biggest and most powerful utility in the country, Verbund Austrian Hydro Power AG (Vienna, Austria), a subsidiary of Verbund AG (OTC:OEZVY) (Vienna). Verbund recently launched a final tender for the construction of the Reisseck II power plant, which is expected to produce 430 MW of power after beginning operations in October 2015.

After receiving the permits in December 2009, the company expects to start construction this November. The Reisseck II power station will connect the two hydraulic systems of the existing groups to take a better advantage of resources. The joint use of storage lakes, facilities, the transformer station and water ducts are the main advantages of the project. Grosser Muehldorfer Lake is about 2,319 meters above sea level and will be used as the upper reservoir. The lower reservoirs, Goesskar and Galgenbichl, are about 1,700 meters above sea level. To pump the water into the upper lake, two 215-MW reversible pumped turbines will be installed below ground level in a subterranean cavern that will be 58 meters long, 25 meters wide and more than 40 meters high. The operation of the new power station will be automatically and remotely-controlled. Verbund is planning to invest approximately 337 million euros ($469 million) in the Reisseck II project.

At the moment, the two hydroelectric complexes consist of seven power stations: three pumped-storage and four run-of-river plants. The project represents the company's efforts to meet the power requirements in Austria, which grows 3% each year.
