Babcock & Brown Completes Construction of $82 Million Windfarm in South Dakota

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Babcock & Brown LP (San Francisco, California), a subsidiary of Babcock & Brown Limited (ASX:BNB) (Sydney, Australia), has completed construction and startup of the $82 million, 51-megawatt (MW) Wessington Springs windfarm project located near Wessington Springs, South Dakota.

Construction of the project began in the spring of this year and was completed in the fall. Babcock & Brown is anticipating having the new facility commissioned and ready for full commercial operation by early December. The project consisted of constructing 34 GE Energy (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) 1.5-MW sle model wind turbine generators in Jerauld County to provide up to 51,000 homes with clean, renewable energy. The project will make both the University of South Dakota and South Dakota State University the first universities in the Midwest to be completely powered by renewable energy.

The new Wessington Springs project will be connected to the grid through Western Area Power Administration's existing Fort Thompson to Sioux Falls 230-kilovolt substation transmission line.

Wanzek Construction Incorporated (Fargo, North Dakota) provided the turnkey engineering, procurement and construction services throughout the duration of construction.
