BASF Selects Engineer for Major Project in Texas

This over $60 million investment will include two major components

Released Tuesday, April 19, 2005

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). BASF Corporation (Florham Park, New Jersey), a subsidiary of BASF AG (NYSE:BF) , has selected CDI Engineering Group (Houston, Texas), a subsidiary of CDI Corporation (NYSE:CDI) , to provide engineering and procurement services for the planned expansion of its Pasadena, Texas, plant site. Industrialinfo.com has been tracking studies for plans to retrofit the 2-EH (2-ethyl hexanol) unit at the site, since BASF acquired the plant site from Sunoco over a year ago.

This over $60 million investment will include two major components, one being a major retrofit of the existing 125,000-ton-per-year 2-EH (2-ethyl hexanol) unit that will enable it to accept an alternate C4 based feedstock and produce an estimated 120,000 tons per year of 2-PH (1-propyl heptanol). The second major component of the project, and the largest piece of the expenditure will be the addition of a new 125,000-ton-per-year esterification unit.

CDI will provide engineering and procurement and prepare bid packages, while BASF will act as its own construction manager. Although some limited construction for outside battery limits (OSBL) portions of this project have already begun, including some retrofits to the barge loading area and tank farm retrofits, construction for the major portions of this project are not expected to kick off until the fourth quarter of 2005. Commercial operation is expected to begin in phases, starting mid-2006 and be complete by the first quarter of 2007.
