Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--The city of Berlin has accelerated its push to become a clean energy capital, as Swedish energy major Vattenfall (Stockholm) has confirmed plans to invest 100 million euro ($113 million) to build a new power-to-heat facility, as well as gas-fired heat-only boilers in the city's Spandau district.
The project will see the installation of three power-to-heat boilers with a combined capacity of 120 megawatts (MW) that will be powered primarily by windfarms to generate district heating. In addition, the company will also install heat-only units powered by gas. Located at the Reuter coal-fired plant, construction is planned to kick- off in autumn this year, and commissioning is planned for 2019. Once commissioned, the coal-fired Unit 3 at the site will be decommissioned.
This is the second Berlin project in recent months for Vattenfall as its works with Berlin to phase out the use of coal-fired power by 2030. Germany's capital city wants to reduce CO2 emissions by 85% and become climate neutral by 2050. In February, Industrial Info reported that the company was to invest 325 million euro ($366 million) on the new CHP plant in the Berlin district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf. The gas-fired CHP will supply 260 megawatts (MW) of electrical power and 230 MW of thermal capacity, while having a claimed fuel efficiency of approximately 90%. For additional information, see February 10, 2017, article - Vattenfall to Build Berlin CHP Plant.
"In February this year, we took the final investment decision on the construction of the new combined heat and power plant in Berlin-Marzahn," said Tuomo Hatakka, responsible for Business Area Heat at Vattenfall. "With our second big investment decision this year for the district heating business, we confirm once more our commitment to our Berlin base and support the local government in their ambition to reach climate neutrality for Berlin by 2050."
Gunther Müller, spokesperson of the board of Vattenfall Wärme AG in Berlin, added: "Our district heating is an important player in Berlin's energy transition. The power-to-heat asset in Spandau will not only optimise the dispatch of the CHP plant Reuter West, but also enable the use of electricity from renewable energy sources to generate climate-friendly district heating in the future."
