Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Siemens (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) has landed a contract to build and service a new 325 million-euro ($356 million) gas-fired cogeneration power plant in Berlin, Germany.
The plant forms part of a drive by local authorities to phase out the use of coal in the country's capital city. It is a trend being seen across Germany as the government pushes its energy transition, "Energiewende," to more renewable energy backed by cleaner gas-fired power. The natural-gas-fired combined-cycle power plant with district heat extraction will be located in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district and have an electrical generating capacity of 260 megawatts (MW) and a thermal capacity of 230 MW. The plant is owned by Vattenfall Wärme AG, part of Swedish energy major Vattenfall (Stockholm, Sweden).
Siemens will supply the major components, including the gas turbine, steam turbine and two electrical generators, all to be fabricated at Siemens' German manufacturing plants in Berlin, Görlitz and Erfurt, Germany. It will also supply the heat-recovery steam generator. The unit is to be erected in a multi-shaft configuration and will, Siemens claimed, achieving a fuel efficiency rating of approximately 90%. Construction has begun, and commissioning is expected in 2020.
"Our district heating systems contribute significantly to achieving climate neutrality in Berlin," commented Gunther Müller, representative of the managing board of Vattenfall Wärme AG in Berlin. "The new combined heat and power plant in Berlin's Marzahn district will play a major role in these efforts, ensuring reliable, climate-friendly district heat for the coming decades and assuming the duty of base-load power plant for the district heat supply networks in the eastern part of the city."
Vattenfall signed a climate protection agreement in 2009 with the Berlin Senate, committing to halve its CO2 emissions by 2020. The city aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 85% and become climate neutral by 2050.
Willi Meixner, chief executive officer of Siemens Power & Gas Division, added: "Environmentally friendly gas-fired cogeneration plants like Berlin-Marzahn can play an important role in pursuing the energy turnaround in Germany and urban centres around the globe."
