Big Easy Biotech: New Orleans Constructs $35 Million BioInnovation Center

Not content to rest on its laurels as home of some of the best jazz in the world, New Orleans is hoping construction of the New Orleans BioInnovation Center (NOBIC) will hit the right note, as it pursues fame in the life science arena. NOBIC will be the first building in the New Orleans Biomedical Research and Development Park. Located on Canal Street, part of the downtown historical district, a 190,000 square foot warehouse will be renovated to serve as the home of NOBIC.

NOBIC was formed through a cooperative partnership comprised of the State of Louisiana's Department of Economic Development, Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, Tulane University Health Sciences Center, and the Louisiana Gene Therapy Research Consortium (LGTRC). The purpose of the project is to offer manufacturing and lab space to start-up pharmaceutical companies and researchers. NOBIC will feature 30,000 square feet of dedicated good manufacturing practices (GMP) laboratory on-site, offering production of materials for Phase I and Phase II clinical trials. Other features of the new center include Class 1 Biosafety cabinets within Class 100,000 Cleanrooms.

Lockwood Greene (Cincinnati, Ohio) designed the project. Construction is set to begin later this year and should be complete in early 2006.
